Sarah K's Gourmet January Recipe Contest (January 29, 2008)DESTIN, FL (January 29, 2008) – Sarah K’s Gourmet hosted the first recipe contest of 2008 on Saturday, January 26th. The store was packed with contestants and their supporters. Harry Herrlinger’s “Not Yo’ Momma’s Grits Casserole” earned first prize, Mark Gray’s Roasted Garlic and Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes took second and Katie Kobbermann’s Sweet Onion Bake won third place. Dianne Hixon’s How Sweet it is - Pineapple Casserole and Katie Kobbermann’s Sweet Onion Bake tied for the People’s Choice award – voted on by the crowd. We welcomed new judges this month: Matt Scheidy, Executive Chef of Tommy Bahama, Courtney Solley, former Culinary Conciege employee and former Marketing Manager of AJ’s Restaurant, and Steve Gudewicz, Branch Manager of Santa Rosa Whitney Bank. The recipes were judged on taste, ease and creativity. Harry lives in Cincinnati, Ohio and resides in Destin during the colder months. Harry is an experienced recipe contest entrant and a seasoned winner! Forty years ago when Harry and his wife Sally were first married, Friday nights were Pot Luck Supper Nights with ten other couples. Harry relates that “One of the women in the group, Lucy Gilmore, brought this dish to the Friday dinner and everyone thought it was wonderful but no one could figure out what it was!” The secret ingredient is the cream of wheat – mostly found in northern cooking, but Lucy was from Lexington, KY. Harry related, “It is so smooth and creamy-I personally like it better than grits and grits are GOOD!!” The recipe is very versatile - it goes with everything-chicken, beef, veal, lamb, fish or pork. It is truly a perfect side dish. You could even add fresh sautéed Gulf shrimp and more cheese to the top to transform it into a nice main course. Harry won a gift certificate to Sarah K’s Gourmet and will be a featured judge at March’s recipe contest. Harry’s “Not Yo’ Momma’s Grits” will be on the Sarah K’s menu starting February 1st so stop in to try some! February’s contest is sponsored by Southern Resorts and the theme is “decadent desserts,” so start brainstorming. The recipes must be submitted by Tuesday, February 12th and the judging ceremony will be held at Sarah K’s Gourmet at 2pm on Saturday, February 16th. The entrants of the top ten recipes submitted will be chosen for judging and the completed dishes must be dropped off by Friday, February 15th by 5pm. Even if you don’t have a dish in the contest you’ll want to stop by for the judging ceremony. You can taste all of the entries and get cooking tips from Sarah K. and our judges while sipping on complimentary champagne, compliments of Southern Resorts.
